The roof ridges are the row of capping tiles on the peaks of the roof. Verges are caps on the rows of tiles coming onto the gable ends of roofs. Traditionally and still commonly the tiles of the roof ridges are attached with mortar. Many roofs don’t have verge caps at all but most new roof builds will have.

New British Standards regulations mean that the verifiably superior mechanical fixing method of a Dry Ridge and Dry Verge system is now becoming more common.

Under testing mechanically fixed ridge tiles and verges were found to be more durable and less likely to come lose in storms. Dry Rigde and Dry Verge systems have many other advantages. They are much easier and quicker to install and they don’t need the continual maintenance of mortar ridges and verges. Dry ridges and verges can greatly extend the life of a roof by making it less susceptible to water damage. They also provide better airflow, reducing condensation in the roof.

Bargeboards could be considered part of the fascia of the roof and if the rof is not gabled or pitched there may be no bargeboards as such. On gabled roofs however the bargeboards are attached to the gable ends. Apart from the protective and structural functions they are often a more ornamental part of the roof than the fascias, especially since they can also be found on dormers or gabled roof windows.

As with fascias bargeboards are often made from wood but can also be made from metal sheeting or from uPVC. They can often be carved or shaped more decoratively than are fascia boards.

Bargeboards can be added to a roof when a loft conversion, conservatory or other extension is made to a house.

The fascia boards are the part of the roofline which faces straight out from the house and create a border just under the outer edges of the roof eaves. The fascia boards protect the interior structure of the roof from the elements and provide an aesthetic embellishment to the roof. They support the lowest row of roof tiles and are also the part of the roof to which the guttering is attached.

Fascia boards are traditionally made from wood but these days can also be uPVC or metal. Wood can be hard to beat on aesthetics but uPVC offers more durability and weather resistance.

Depending on the type of roof and house design the fascia boards can extend all around the house or just on a couple of sides.

County Roofing recommend uPVC for fascias and soffits because of the lower cost, longer lifespan and general better performance. Unlike wood uPVC won’t need repainting. Of course wood has an aesthetic advantage and if this is important to you we completely understand and can install perfectly good wooden soffits.

We also recommend putting air vents in the soffits to prevent moisture from damaging the roof timbers and to prevent mold from taking hold in the roof.
